A new study released by researchers at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry links the use of oral osteoporosis drugs such as Fosomax to an increase in jaw necrosis.

According to researchers, even a short-term use of the popular drug may leave the jaw vulnerable to devastating necrosis. Drug makers have maintained that osteonecrosis of the jaw is only noticeable with intravenous use of such drugs, not oral usage, which drug makers deem negligible.

Researchers in the USC study found a four percent risk of ONJ from oral osteoporosis drugs, a figure they contend is not negligible.

USC researchers point out that many patients on these drugs do not know about the risks because most doctors do not inform patients about the potential ONJ risks.
